Collegium musicum is a Renaissance-style costumed ensemble of high school singers in grades 9 - 12 in Ona, WV. The ensemble was directed by Ed Harkless, now retired, the original founder of the group (initially started as a before school ensemble at Barboursville High School) and 41 year veteran teacher in the Cabell County School System. Mr. Harkless began his teaching career 1979-1974 in the Meigs Local (Ohio) School system before coming to Cabell County. He taught at Barboursville Junior High 1984-1989 and Barboursville High 1989-1994 prior to being one of the original staff members of Cabell Midland High School in 1994.
Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, Christa Navy, a Cabell Midland and Marshall University alum will take over the ensemble.
Students in the ensemble are selected by competitive audition in early spring each year during scheduling for the next school year. Each year, these singers present up to 40 programs to the community.
Additionally, they have traveled each spring since the opening of the school in 1994. Performance venues have included such diverse locales as the Washington Cathedral, Washington, DC; St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland; Casa Loma,Toronto, CA; San Francisco and San Diego in addition to local community and civic presentations as well as an annual trip to and performance at the Carolina Renaissance Festival (where Mr. Harkless was Knighted in 2014 in recognition of many years of Collegium musicum performing "for the Queen")
Collegium musicum presents the Annual Christmas Madrigal Dinner on the second full week-end in December each year.
Collegium musicum first toured Ireland in April 2006, performing in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Blarney Castle and Knappogue Castle and returned to Ireland in April of 2011 performing a joint concert with friend and organist Mr. Timothy Waugh at Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin and at Bunratty Castle, Shannon and again in 2014 to visit and perform at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin on St. Patrick's Day and Bunratty Castle.
Collegium musicum traveled to New York City in March 2016, returned to Ireland in 2017, Boston, NYC and Philadelphia in 2018 and again to Ireland in 2019.
Then, when post Covid made travel possible again, Collegium musicum returned once more in March 2023 to Ireland. They gave a concert in Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin, sang in St. Michan's, Dublin, and returned to Bunratty Castle for a performance at the Medieval Banquet. They also performed for the guests at Killarney Towers.
